Grutas de Tolantongo

We had been dreaming about this trip for almost two years. With two little kids and the constant rhythm of work and life, finding the perfect window for a family escape felt nearly impossible. But this spring break, somehow, everything aligned — and the four of us finally set off on an adventure to Grutas de Tolantongo.
Our journey began in Mexico City, where we spent a weekend soaking in the energy, food, and color of the city. Then came the road trip — four hours that slowly carried us away from the urban buzz into something wilder and more untouched. The drive itself was beautiful, but the last hour… that was something else. A winding serpentine road climbing into the mountains, revealing dramatic views at every turn. The kind that makes you pause, even with kids in the backseat asking “are we there yet?”
And then — we arrived.
Imagine a canyon carved deep into the earth, with surreal turquoise waters cutting through it. Perched along the cliffs are natural stone baths filled with warm, mineral-rich water, glowing in shades of blue that don’t feel real. That’s Grutas de Tolantongo. The water is naturally heated — in some pools it’s gently warm, in others almost hot — all coming from underground springs. It felt like stepping into another world.

We stayed at Hotel Paraíso II, the first hotel at the top of the mountain — and honestly, the view alone was worth the trip. Waking up above the canyon, watching the morning light spill over the mountains, with mist rising from the river below… those are the moments you don’t forget.
For three days, we lived in swimsuits. Mornings in the cliffside pools, afternoons exploring — from zip lines that made our hearts race to quiet dinners at local restaurants under the stars. A small tip: bring cash. Most places here keep it simple and don’t accept cards, which somehow adds to the charm of the whole experience.
This trip was even more special because it happened to fall on my wife’s birthday. At 7 a.m., before the crowds arrived, we slipped into the warm pools for a quiet moment — just us and the mountains. We took her birthday photos right there, surrounded by mist and that unreal blue water. It was peaceful, beautiful, and felt like the perfect way to celebrate her.
On our last day, we made our way down to the river — the same iconic blue ribbon you see from above. Sitting in that warm, flowing water, surrounded by towering canyon walls, was the highlight of it all. The kids played, we slowed down, and time felt like it stretched in the best possible way.
What stayed with me the most, though, wasn’t just the landscape — it was the people. Everyone we met was warm, welcoming, and genuinely kind. Traveling with kids can sometimes feel overwhelming, but here it felt easy. Natural.
This wasn’t just a trip. It was one of those rare experiences where everything comes together — family, nature, adventure, and stillness. And as we packed up to leave, already tired and sun-kissed, we all knew one thing:
We’ll be back..
With love Sasha.
